A Moment of Silence for Indiana Jones...

It's done. Finished.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has ruined any chance of a classic action legacy becoming a legend.

A moment of silence for Indiana Jones.

OK, so I have just gotten home from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and I am afraid to say that I have to agree with Casey on this one. Between the absolutely ludicrous action cuts and the bizarre and pointless film sequences (what was the deal with the car full of teens in the opening sequence? What are we supposed to take away from that?) the movie falls utterly short of the standards this franchise has set in the past three films. I mean really, there is a difference between physical comedy and outright stupidity on screen (Shia LaBeouf swinging from the trees like Tarzan to catch up to the high speed jungle pursuit? Really?). I'm not going to take the time to give a full critique here since new releases aren't exactly a focus of this blog, but I wanted to voice my agitation at the soiling of yet another Lucas trilogy.

I think the only good thing about the whole movie was the sword fight between LaBeouf and Blanchett, which was admittedly sweet. But precede that by the mysterious appearance of Marion Ravenwood (or is it Williams?) and follow it by inexplicable tarzan antics by Shia, and you've basically nullified any and all sweetness.

It just makes me sad.

I think that you might be able to enjoy this movie if you think of it as slapstick comedy rather than great action. I'm personally a big fan of the Last Crusade (a misnomer as it turns out). My roommate liked it, but has yet to justify why. I feel bad for slandering Indiana's legacy. Some will inevitably enjoy it. You may as well.

It's not without its moments. In fact, I've heard many folks say that they quite enjoyed it. As a fan of the franchise, you definitely need to see it for yourself. My girlfriend though it was great, and as a summer blockbuster I thought it deserved about a B-. But as an addition to the Indiana Jones story line it was piss poor. Again, see it for yourself, maybe you'll take away something totally different than Casey and I.
